In this lesson, we looked explored the ancient Silk Road trade route that ran through Asia and we then looked at the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s efforts to create a new age Silk Road. The aim of the Belt and Road is to promote trade and commerce between China and other countries. China has been accused however of ‘Debt Trap Diplomacy’ where they build infrastructure in developing countries knowing these countries will default on loans and then leverage this.
In this lesson we looked at the quality of life of people living in the slums of Bangalore, India and the various projects in place to try and improve standard of living. These projects are run by either local people within the slums or government organisations. In this lesson we explored deforestation in Nepal and how the affect it may have. The Nepalese people rely on the forest for various resources such as food, energy and building materials. Deforestation is now happening at a much faster rate than ever due to rapid population increases taking place in Nepal as well as other parts of Asia. This has lead to a loss of resources for the local people and increased flooding.
